Ooops! I have to revoke some of the information I have been giving. This hardware does not work with *any* X 4.x.
On the old system, the one with X working, the X server I am actually running was > XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System > (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300) > Release Date: January 8 2000 ... > Configured drivers: > S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0) > newmmio, mmio_928, s3_generic ... Come to look for it, I do have two X servers installed next to each other: $ dpkg -s xserver-s3 Package: xserver-s3 Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: x11 Installed-Size: 2388 Maintainer: Branden Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Source: xfree86v3 Version: 3.3.6-23 Replaces: xbase (<< 3.3.2.1-1) Provides: xserver Depends: xserver-common-v3 (>= 3.3.6-17), libc6 (>= 2.1.97), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.3) Description: X server for S3 chipset-based graphics cards ... $ dpkg -s xserver-xfree86 Package: xserver-xfree86 Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: x11 Installed-Size: 11288 Maintainer: Branden Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Source: xfree86 Version: 4.0.2-1 Replaces: xserver-common (<< 4.0), libxfont-xtt (<< 1:1.3.0.1-13) Provides: xserver Depends: xserver-common (>> 4.0), debconf (>= 0.2.26), libc6 (>= 2.1.97), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.3) Suggests: mdetect, read-edid Description: the XFree86 X server ... Installing a 4.x xserver and running 3.3 - is that a bug or a feature? I found nothing in /etc/alternatives, but I do have a symbolic link $ ls -l /etc/X11/X lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 29. Dez 2000 /etc/X11/X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_S3 When I change that to point to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86, I get the exact same trouble with 4.0 as I do with 4.2 and 4.3. Did I ever mention that I do get screen output? Well, I do. The screen blackens every once in a while. But that could result from ntpd madly trying to keep the system clock on track, combined with the screen saver. So the information that my hardware works with some 4.* version of X was plain wrong. (The hardware does run nicely with the above 3.3.6.)
