When I come back and find the machine locked up the display is usually blank but a couple of times it has had nerverot from xscreensaver frozen on it. This has been going on since 4.2.x entered unstable (and hence my machine).
The frequency of lockups is less than once a day. I'm going to set the
screensaver to stay on nerverot all the time and will add to this report if
the frequency increases.
Did that ever end up making any difference?
I don't think that was it. It turns out that one of the IDE controllers on my motherboard, being all new and shiny and having many ports, is only barely supported under kernel 2.4.21. If I don't mount the drives that are attached to it, my system never has any lockups. That the screensaver was on nerverot a few times was apparently just a coincidence.
