I tried this again with kernel 2.6.36-rc6 and xserver-xorg-video intel 2:2.13.0-1, both from experimental. Now apparently I can change the backlight sometimes without the mouse pointer disappearing. Sometimes the pointer stays, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't figured out a pattern yet, but in a way it is an improvement.
