Package: xserver-xorg-dev
Version: 2:1.7.7-3
Severity: wishlist

I just debugged a problem of a user of a non-working just built third-party
video driver that boiled down to non-matching versions of xserver-xorg-core
and xserver-xorg-dev installed (different xorg-video-abi).

It would therefore be nice if xserver-xorg-dev would conflict with
non-matching versions of xserver-xorg-core.

I'm tempted to say wontfix/close this bug. IMHO, a perfectly valid use
case which would no longer be allowed:
 - have server X installed
 - install -dev for server Y
 - prepare drivers for Y
 - install Y server & Y drivers if everything goes fine

Also, you should have received dependencies against the ABI specified
in the -dev package, so the hand-built packages should have depended
on the appropriate version of the server. See:

http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-xorg/xsfbs.git;a=commitdiff;h=b045afbd8277ad0c44e29d7c45802053c4335ccd;hp=8bd2e9b523da35493db1bd781d4ef6bfbbeb2eff

(xsfbs gets merged in all drivers. That might change at some point,
though.)

Having written that, I'm quite convinced I'm not going to introduce
conflicts.

KiBi.
