Sorry, I goofed; for xserver-xfree86{,-dbg} you need to use the
DEBUG_FREE86_DEBCONF variable (debconf's DEBCONF_DEBUG variable will
work as well).
Also, it's worth making sure that sudo isn't scrubbing the environment.
(I know what its manpage says, but experiment is the best indicator.)
