I could no longer reproduce the hang, even after downgrading xserver-xorg to 1:7.4+4 and dependencies to compatible versions, and reinstalling hal. I did not try downgrading udev from 164-3 to whatever version was in testing back then. The hang was very reproducible when I originally reported it.
