gnome-screensaver misbehaving maybe? What if you use xscreensaver
instead for a few suspend/resume cycles?

Can you check what X and gnome-screensaver are doing at that time,
blocked somewhere? For the former, gdb attach might be what you want;
for the latter, strace -f -p $(pidof gnome-screensaver) (or similar)
might be what you want. gdb + X is documented here:
