The problem is not with X: gpm and mev also fail to detect the
right button before X is started.

Nor does it seem to be a kernel problem: using an older kernel before
the problem occured does not fix things.

I will investigate further when time allows: I suppose udev is the place
to start...

I would reassign this bug if I knew which package to target :-)
