The patch works, absolutely. My issue was caused also by the deactivation of 3d-support by vmware itself. I was missing DRI proper configuration in the host machine and the vmware player couldn't activate the 3D support for the guest. When I've fixed that by configuring DRI properly, the patch solve the guest problem and everything works nicely =)
