Wow, thanks so much for the speedy response! I would really like to stay with gnome-shell on this system if possible. I have been playing HD videos to try to trigger the problem, but I believe it took either hours or days for the crash to occur originally.
I will use nouveaux full-time until I run into the issue again and report back right away. Just to see if that still triggers the nouveau bug. And then if xfce4 is stable, you could perhaps try `mplayer -vo xv somefile.avi` to see if that will trigger the problem instead. Thanks!
