It is up to the operating system to decide whether the request for additional memory will be granted or not. This ensures that the graphics processor has a guaranteed amount of graphics memory but the downside is once allocated, this memory cannot be used by the operating system even when it is not in use. But when i set it to fixed mode, it crashed, so it is likely it tried to allocate more memory.
