Dear Stephan,

unfortunately I was unable to find a solution other than using
VGA-cables which is feasible *for me*.

The problem does not exist in Debian testing (jessie) so my guess is
Ubuntu 14.x most probably works. You can check this with a live-CD - if
you don't have time to do so please tell me: I should find time to test
this on Thursday afternoon.
