sorry it took me so much time. I upgraded xserver-xorg-core to 2:1.19.3-1 (in sid) and removed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that was forcing xorg to load the intel driver. I then restarted the X display and was able to reproduce the visual flashes (or rather visible screen refresh) and hard crash followed by an automatic shutdown about 10s later.
