Heya, couldn't find any instructions on the XSF page about how to report
potential
problems with the phase 2 xfree4 packages, so I hope this is the correct place
to send
problem reports (well it probably isn't, probably debian-x is the correct place
no? but
the desc of that mailing list sort of turned me off to it..) anyway.
The main problem I've had with the phase 2 xfree4 packages is that xf86cfg
crashes
with 'illegal instruction' shortly after it draws its window, and exits
immediately.
I'm not sure if this is a known problem or not. My hardware setup may be
helpful.
I have a Vaio F-series, with a Neomagic NM2200. By copying my old video modes
into
the XF86Config file (after the skeleton is created by xf86cfg) makes X work as
expected (which is nearly perfectly).
Here is the exact output of xf86cfg when run from a working X session:
Module ABI versions:
XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.1
XFree86 Video Driver: 0.3
XFree86 XInput driver : 0.1
XFree86 Server Extension : 0.1
XFree86 Font Renderer : 0.1
Loader running on linux
Illegal instruction
When I run it under gdb it produces this output:
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86cfg
Cannot access memory at address 0x40016de0
Makes me think its doing funny memory stuff...
If I run in gdb with electric fence it draws most of the window and then locks
up
with no error:
(gdb) efence
Enabled Electric Fence
(gdb) run
The program being debugged has been started already.
Start it from the beginning? (y or n) y
Starting program: /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86cfg

Hrm, confusing behavor.
Anyway, hope this is somewhat useful. This is just about the extent of my
debugging
ability without going to get the source, which would be my next step if it was
really
important for me to use this utility.
as always,
nick
