Good god, we just went through ten ideas, and not a one helped. I knew each was lousy individually, but .. I hoped one in the middle would do the trick. MTRRs are, I think, memory type range registers. Maybe they are used to implement finer-grained memory protection than segments, which is what I think Linux uses. The option for this is somewhere near the top of the kernel config script.
