After upgrading to the 4.2.0pre1v1 packages my /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config had the following two lines in it:
DisplayManager._0.startup: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/GiveConsole DisplayManager._0.reset: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/TakeConsole which resulted in not being able to start a window manager after logging in, because these files don't exist. Instead XDM restarted and came back with the login window. Commenting out both lines fixed the problem.
