The problem with startx no longer starting my window manager, the
ssh-agent, etc... was that somehow I managed to delete
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.

This file tells xinit to run /etc/X11/Xsession which in turn will
do all the fancy stuff like:

* starting ssh-agent if 'use-ssh-agent' is present in
  /etc/X11/Xsession.options
* start the /usr/bin/x-session-manager (in my case startkde)

The Right Way(tm) to solve this problem was:

# dpkg -i --force-confmiss xbase-client*

That's reinstalling the package's configuration files.

Thanks a lot Branden for helping this poor user :D
