I suspect something fishy is going on here.

When my maintainer scripts bomb, they are usually quite loud about it.

I.e., they actually spew an error message, they do not silently exit
with a nonzero status.

Please do the following as root:

# script
# export DEBUG_XFREE86_PACKAGE=true
# export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=readline
# dpkg --configure xserver-xfree86
# exit
# mailx -s "Re: Bug#249447: xserver-xfree86: Problem when upgrading from
4.3.0-7 to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 on Unstable" \
  [EMAIL PROTECTED] < typescript

Also, FYI, 4.3.0-7 is no longer supported. XFree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 has
been in Debian testing ("sarge") for almost a month now. I have not
seen any other reports of this particular problem against any version of
the package.
