Hm, that sounds plausible (it would also explain #184176, which has been slightly annoying me for years). I never knew ptys were a best-effort transport :-). If that's true, then it sounds like this is a kernel bug, right? I tried briefly to come up with a clean reproduction case, but ptys don't play well enough with cat/echo/etc for me to do it right now.
