If you don't mind, I am repurposing this bug to be a wishlist item that one should be able to use the X Input extension to accomplish button remapping on input devices. xmodmap is deprecated, and has been for a long time (it's ignorant of advances in X11 technology since 1989 or so, like the KEYBOARD and INPUT extensions). Sadly, there doesn't seem to be anything to take its place when it comes to re-ordering pointer buttons. Using the GPM approach is well and good, but it really just masks the problem by going behind the X server's back and making the device look different. -- G.
