...ah ha. This is meant for PS/2 mode, isn't it? I will try it again
when I find the required adaptor, but I'm using USB mode, in which the
wheel actually shows up in a completely separate USB device, a mouse
(N.B. not the actual mouse I have, but a fake one generated by the
keyboard). I think earlier, bizarrely, I found these missing buttons
appearing in that device too.

...perhaps this is a kernel bug? Or is my hardware really so completely
mis-designed?
