I think I hit this bug, too:

  - Total display lock (but system still up, I could login via ssh)
  - X went crazy and started sucking 99% cpu
  - X not killable, even with SIGKILL (wondering how this can happen in
    userspace).
  - On Linux 2.6.17.  It didn't happen to me before with 2.6.8, but then again
    my 3d support was disabled then.

There are a pair of differences:

  - My Xorg.log ends with a (seemingly) infin loop.  It managed to write the
    same blurb 58 times.  Attached.

  - My X worked fine for a few days (and it even displayed trivial opengl
    clients like glxgears).  It did only crash when attempting to run xmoto.

I'll try the attached patch when I have more time.
