I now observe the same thing in Ubuntu, after upgrading from 6.06 "dapper" to 6.10 "edgy", e.g. with
p=`ps -fC Xorg`
time perl -e '$|=1; foreach $x (1..500) { print "x" foreach(1..$x); print "
$x\n" }'
echo "$p"; ps -fC Xorg
Funny...
