I put this into the "Device" section and tried 1600x1200 and 1280x1024, but there were no changes. Two more observations: 1. I have no idea if this is significant, but I wondered, what would happen, if I removed the kernel boot parameter 'vga=799' I usually use. Result: no changes in the top part, but the bottom part now shows 24 readable lines of kernel boot messages (of 64 fitting on the whole screen). When I Alt-Ctrl-F1 to the console, it is 80x25 characters, but with 3 blank lines on top and on bottom, which are not scrolled into. 2. I am reasonable sure that the problem is in the vesa driver, because I cloned the system partition and installed the proprietary mtx driver from Matrox. This works without problems.
