I have been running Gnome 2.14 (the one in Etch) on top of the Xorg packages from Debian/experimental on a i945 chipset for a while. Resizing or rotating XRandR 1.2 works very well and Gnome's behavior is fine. The only problem I remember of is about rotation with XRandR 1.1 (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9973) but I don't think it's related to Gnome.
