Oh, then upgrading or downgrading xserver-xorg-video-nv doesn't matter since this driver isn't used at all. Is there a way you try without the proprietary nvidia driver? I'd like to be sure it's not caused by it. Changing nvidia into nv in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and maybe removing a couple non-trivial option) should do the trick.
