I can confirm that adding "EXANoComposite" to my xorg.conf resolves the problem. As for confirming the behaviour for previous versions of xserver-xorg and/or mesa, I can only offer that I have had this particular problem for a while but compiz was not in a position to be used on a daily basis so I didn't file any bugs. It now works well on my system now so I reported this bug. So my informed guess is yes it was a problem but I can't definitely confirm. Thanks for your help!
