Actually, what you should need is Modeline+PreferredMode. PreferredMode is useless without ModeLine. But Modes shouldn't be needed at all.
Ah, I actually even saw that, but did not realize it is applicable. As written, I understood it as /only/ being of interest if I use multiple monitors -- which I don't. So please mention it affects video mode configuration in all cases.
