After downgrading xserver-xorg-core, I still experienced this freezing. I now have also downgraded xserver-xorg-video-nv and so far it has been good. I remarked during the latest freeze (and hopefully last) that the Xorg proess was consuming 99% cpu, killing it and restarting it from another machine brought it back to freeze immediately.
