And actually it is now back to the same behavior than in the old 6.6.x days. IIRC, by default, it just tries to use the BIOS mode. If this default mode doesn't work, you need to either change your BIOS config or use AGPMode in xorg.conf. The developers have been looking for a sane default for a while. But, both the new and the previous behaviors cause some freeze on some machines. They don't know how to do anything better unfortunately...
