your Xorg log and config, for a start (this would have been included

btw, you can always switch VT with chvt.

Well, running a su just to change terminals seems like overkill:

1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/usr/src/xkb-data-does-not-show-all-layouts $ LANG=C chvt 7
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console

it breaks when the server can't build an xkb keymap.

(**) Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
(**) Generic Keyboard: XkbRules: "xorg"

(**) Option "XkbLayout" "ro"
(**) Generic Keyboard: XkbLayout: "ro"
(**) Option "XkbVariant" "standard"
(**) Generic Keyboard: XkbVariant: "standard"

and the 'standard' variant of the 'ro' layout doesn't seem to exist.
that's probably the problem here. looks like the variant is named
'std' (see /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ro).

Indeed, thanks. I am using std instead and is working now. Still I am not sure if the variant name hasn't changed, since before 1.3-1 ctrl+alt+Fx used to work.

I will check again to be sure that upgrades from Etch to Lenny aren't broken in this regard. If not, then I guess this bug can be closed since it would be obvious my error that caused it.
