After upgrading from etch, the new X server displays some programs,
e.g. firefox or xdm, in extremely tiny fonts.
It turns out that the new X server requires a call parameter setting
the screen resolution:
Change
exec /usr/bin/X11/X -nolisten tcp
into
exec /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp
The same fix is required for the Xserverrc startup arguments in the
xdm package (separately filed).

Please read /usr/share/doc/xinit/NEWS.Debian.gz.
File a separate bug against xserver-xorg-core if your monitor's size
isn't detected correctly, and make sure to include your log and config.
