I think the problem is just that the resolution of the screen is very high (and the screen very small), which makes the fonts use a lot of pixels and appear too large on the Eee. IIUC the X server tries to make fonts with the same point size appear with the same fisical size on the screen; this can be not the best behaviuor on small screens (used from a small distance) or very big screens (used from far away), but I can't find another consistent model that would fit every use scenario...
