I solved the issue: The cause for the error messages were two processes; conky and xscreensaver which were not being closed properly at session exit.
I appended my X startup script to include closing commands for both processes and no longer get the errors. I don't know if this counts as a bug in Xorg since I don't know if this is the intended behaviour for applications that get terminated when X exits.
