I also have experinced problems with nouveau. I have nouveau git driver and drm git. If I upgrade the server to 1.7, install the necessary tool and recompile nouveau, when rebooting it start correctly. but as soon as I launch glxgears, it crash hard.
Starting xbmc gives me a kdm prompt. Looking at the trace, I found an error in the kernel path for DMA allocation. Same kernel, same driver (well recompiled but...) so I think there is a problem with corrupted data passed to kernel for allocating DMA channels.
