Found more info: The xorg log remains empty, because X is not started. An strace of xdm showed it was looking in /usr/X11R6/bin/X for the X server, but there is none. I created this directory and made a link to /usr/bin/X in it, and now xdm works. (It does not find its proper resources, though; the background is all black). So, it appears that the xdm binary needs to be adapted to the new situation. I have attached the xdm log here (before I made the directory and link).
