I ran into this bug, and yes it should be critical since it results in lockups after X tries to start and crashes a couple times. I grabbed the linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64 package from Squeeze and booted with it, which results in a usable system again. It looks like there was a regression in upstream kernel.org per this post, http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0907.2/01018.html though I'd expect it has been fixed in 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 in Squeeze so...
