Problem: no X server no video, no mouse, only console, ppc iMac G3 /etc/init.d/gdm stop start restart gives no display. ctrl + alt + backspace gives no video result, it is exactly as if someone turns of the monitor. Note that recent X servers display a black screen (instead of the classic mesh and a mouse cursor) by default, and ignore ctrl-alt-backspace by default. You could try startx instead of xdm.
