retitle 576454 Synaptics configuration lost by upgrade

It turns out that the driver is working, it is just that my
configuration (that sets up things like multitouch and click-drag) in
the xorg.conf file is being ignored.
Something is wrong about that, but I'm not quite sure what. Please take
your pick:
1. there's no warning at upgrade time that the configuration will be
ignored; or
2. the configuration is not automatically rewritten to the new ways; or
3. things are changing for no good reason; or
4. the default configuration is bad.
Julien, what is the new way to configure the touchpad?
