The 'garbage' I am referring to is letters and colours in random
placement each time I reboot, so I lost my ability to switch to VT's
in case something goes wrong with my X. Card is a NVidia GeForce (02:00.0 VGA
compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8500 GT] (rev a1)
(prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) ) - as reported by lspci.
This card should work fine, I have the same model…

Sorry, it's a self-compiled one. 'ls -alh /boot | grep vmlinuz' says
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.3M Feb 24 21:25 vmlinuz-2.6.32-3-amd64
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.3M Apr 6 02:57 vmlinuz-2.6.32-4-amd64
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.3M Mar 17 21:20 vmlinuz-2.6.33-2-amd64
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.3M Apr 15 00:11 vmlinuz-2.6.34-rc4-00054-g2ba3abd
and I get the same behaviour with all of them . And yes, my very
mistake, it uses the nv driver, so this bug might probably be moved to
xserver-xorg-video-nv.
