After testing for the last couple of weeks with the previously mentioned workaround disabling "dri" in xorg.conf I am still experiencing the same problems.
For now I reverted back to using the vesa drivers. glxgears shows that FPS has dropped from ~1000 (openchrome) to ~500 (vesa).
