It sounds like a problem with their mail client. The "U" means unread, the
"R" means read. It sounds like the client downloads the file once ("U") at
which point IMail changes the status to "R", and the client downloads the
E-mail again.
If you check your IMail logs, you'll likely see that the mail client is
retrieving the mail twice.
