Excellent point. Personally, I think the "safer" and better alternative, would be to stop the SMTP service, then shut down. You don't really want to do anything to your server that may cause headaches in the future, such as a fast shutdown. A little "shutdown script" on the desktop works well for situations like this. We've done it in a lot of cases where a 'clean shutdown' is desirable, such as properly terminating services in a certain order, etc.
