Actually, it didn't have a negative connotation in christian dogma till
St Thomas Aquinas (and AFAIK it still doesn't in Judaism or Islam; it
depends on the circumstances).  Read John Donne for an interesting
(16th Century) essay on the subject.

But I digress....
