There are a couple of reasons why apt should not do this imho:
1 - there are no Packages-files for sources, so it would be hard to incorporate
in the apt code.
2 - I see no reason to burden the apt team with this, the GUI is much more
important at the moment. Anyone is free to code this themselves.
