It took 100% CPU for a couple of minutes on my Pentium 233 which indicates to me that it was never going to complete whatever it was trying to do. gzip decompressing the file in /var/state/apt/lists/partial took only a few seconds so that wasn't the problem. Once I manually decompressed the file and put it in the /var/state/apt/lists directory and used "touch -r" to give it the right time stamp everything was fine and apt operations now proceed as normal. -- System Information Debian Release: 2.1 Kernel Version: Linux lyta 2.2.0 #1 Tue Jan 26 18:37:37 GMT 1999 i586 unknown Versions of the packages apt depends on: ii libc6 2.0.7.19981211 GNU Libc: shared libraries ii libstdc++2.9 2.91.60-4 The GNU stdc++ library (egcs version) --- Begin /etc/apt/sources.list (modified conffile) deb http://debian.midco.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable non-US deb http://ftp1.us.debian.org/debian dists/slink/main/binary-i386/ deb http://ftp1.us.debian.org/debian dists/slink/non-free/binary-i386/ --- End /etc/apt/sources.list
