Uhm, I suggest you email the kernel people not me. Your kernel self destructing certainly can't be APT's fault. Some early 2.2 kernels did this infrequently on i386, all processes would suddenly get stuck in the D state and the machine would go down. Some bug in the mmu or something - haven't seen it happen past 2.2.5 Jason
