Thanks, I installed squid and set that option, and everything
works great now.  Amazing.

(I did have one weird problem ... most connections "reset by peer" 
when I ran apt-get on the gateway machine.  I worked around it by
pointing apt-get to localhost rather than to the fqdn.  I believe
it's a problem related to misconfiguration of IP masq.)
