the standard http_proxy format is machine:port lynx and other
programs relies on it.
However if this variable is set to proxy:3128, apt-get fails miserably
trying to connect to port 80 of machine named 3128
a typical error message is
Failed to fetch
http://security.debian.org/dists/stable/updates/main/binary-i386/Packages
Cannot initiate the connection to 3128:80 (0.0.12.56). - connect (22 Invalid
argument)
