Package: apt
Version: 0.5.4
Severity: wishlist

It would very useful if apt had a facility to purge packages _from the
database_ without
purging the config files for the package. For example, I have installed
exim-tls, which
shares config files with exim. I now have exim-tls working and have removed
exim, but not
purged it, because if I purge it, then it will delete the config files for
exim-tls (since
they are the same ones).

Perhaps a --databaseonly option so that this idea could be used with remove
too? (removing
packages from the database without removing the binaries/docs etc.) Obviously
this option
would never be turned on by default and a warning would be placed in the
documentation
against abusing it.

Alternatively, how about an auto-detect so that config files are not purged if
they are
shared? (such as in the case above)
